Reaction: Advantages and Disadvantages of the Media

March 6th, 2008 by technitus

Here is a nice comment from Colby. Thanks for your interesting contribution!

“This is a great topic for discussion. There are so many viewpoints that is gonna be hard to nail one that everyone will agree on, so with that I present you with my views on the media.

I think that some is good and some is rubbish. I like hearing about what is happening in the world, and would love just that. But you do get huge media giants out there wanting to express their opinions, even though no one wants to hear them. You also have some that will show the bad things of the world and show that the world is going to hell, then they blame someone or something to make it worse.

I think that there needs to be some re-imaging of the media business model. It would prove better in the long run I am sure. Although I have a lot of opinions, here are some of the smaller ones, and I don’t want to take up the entire comment section.

Cheers.”

Discussion: Advantages and Disadvantages of the Media

February 26th, 2008 by technitus

Recently I was thinking about the advantages and the disadvantages of the media. Now I wanted to ask the public. What do you think, how does the media help us in everyday life? How and when does it negatively influence us?

Here are some terms that might be taken into consideration:

- war
- education
- entertainment
- relationships
- jobs
- prejudices
- etc.

Excuse or Truth?

February 23rd, 2008 by technitus

“Success is not measured by what one brings, but by what one leaves.”

What do you think? Is this just an excuse to ease our conscience?
Is this just a quote stated by one particular society?
Does this quote go for all societies? Does it go for our society?

Blindness

February 20th, 2008 by technitus

Imagine all the things we know. Better yet, the things we are willing to know, the things we believe we know. How much is there that we don’t know/see.

I think there is a lot more to know than we do. And I also think that ‘the world’ would be much bigger and much more beautiful if we knew ‘more’.

Have you ever experienced this feeling of idleness? The feeling of just being part of a stupid, ever-repeating and never-ending social cycle?

Quote of the Day #3

February 16th, 2008 by technitus

quote-start.gif

It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

Reaction: What’s the ‘meaning of life’ for you?

February 15th, 2008 by technitus

Here’s another nice comment by Starstuff:

“The universe puts us into places where we can learn. They are never easy places. But they are right.” (Delenn, Babylon 5)
For me, the meaning of life is to learn and to share and use that knowledge to change things, to make things better. And probably at some point I will realize that it’s not the various goals that matter, but the path I travel to get to them.

That’s an interesting comment. I like the last sentence. It’s something to think about for more than just 2 seconds. Thanks for your comment Starstuff!

Reaction: What’s the ‘meaning of life’ for you?

February 13th, 2008 by technitus

Interesting comment by ‘Leon’.

“I guess the ‘meaning of life’ is based on whatever society places priority on.”

So for some people it might be to go to heaven, for some it might be to be resurrected as a different creature and for some other people it might just be happiness.

In my case, at least that’s what I think at the moment, it’s just to be happy.
Thanks for your participation Leon! I’m looking forward to further comments.

Discussion: What’s the ‘meaning of life’ for you?

February 12th, 2008 by technitus

Has the ‘meaning of life’ always been the same?
Was it the same in primitive times?
Has it changed ever since?
Are there several ‘meanings of life’?
Where is the line between ‘meaning of life’ and ‘way of life’ to be drawn?

Discussion: ‘natural’ vs ‘normal’

February 11th, 2008 by technitus

What is the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘normal’ in our contemporary society?

What is ‘natural’, what is ‘normal’, what is both?
Just to name some examples:
- sex
- relationships
- nudity (in public / at home)
- loneliness
- care
- emotions
- sense of shame
- cleanliness
- the universe

If you want you can come up with some other examples. I’m looking forward to your comments.
